Free Washington webcam sites
The US has recently started removing two dams, in what is the biggest dam removal project in US history. The three-year project will see both the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams removed simultaneously to allow the Elwha river to flow freely once more. The project began this month and is being broadcast to the world via six different webcams.
The two dams were constructed in the 1900s to produce electricity for the region. Over time, concerns have switched from electricity generation to ecosystems and fish populations. Both dams severely limit the amount of habitat available for fish and other marine life, hence the desire to remove them.
The removal of the dams will create 70 miles of both spawning and rearing habitat for fish. It is predicted that this will mean that the salmon population will rise from 3,000 to 400,000. This increase will also support other species, making the river a varied source of marine life once again.
